So, you’re in Las Vegas NV, you lost money at the tables…it’s summer… the buffet lines are a mile long…it’s crowded and hot!!! Maybe you are staying here past the traditional 2-3 days and you are looking for something off the strip where you can enjoy yourself and relax or you damn near lost half your money on day 1 and need to stretch your funds to last the rest of the trip! Well, at any rate, you’re in luck because I have lived in Las Vegas for over 15 years and I am about to let you in on some of the hidden gems of this amazing town! So let’s assume you are here 5 days and you need to fill 3 of those days off the strip. Starting with…
Day 1:The Arts District: Located about 9 miles north of the strip, this part of town is where the locals go to unwind every first Friday of the month after a long work week. Whether it’s catching a beer at HUDL or grabbing some fine Jamaican cuisine at Jammyland there are dozens of cool and trendy spots to enjoy off the strip for a few hours. That’s not even the best part, the best part is all the amazing artwork and murals scattered around this area for you to enjoy as you stroll down Main Street, hence the name “The Arts District”.
DAY 2: Summerlin NV, where the rich folk congregates. Located about 11 miles west of the strip. With all due respect to my Green Vally Ranch area people out in Henderson, it is a well-known fact among the locals that if you are well off financially then Summerlin is where you want to live. Now, it does not have the same “upper class” feel of Beverly Hills in California but it is nice. Some of the better local spots and parks rest in this area. Speaking of which, Downtown Summerlin opened a few years back and is the main outside promenade for shopping, drinks, movies, etc. Maybe you just want to stroll around and take in the sights. This is a perfect spot for all of that and more! Right next to that is one of the more famous station casinos in Las Vegas: Red Rock Casino. Most of the locals of the area come here to scratch that itch to gamble. But it has all of the other amenities as the casinos on the strip just not as much hoopla or parking issues and with a splash of a local feel. Next up is,
DAY:3 Henderson NV, my neck of the woods. Just head south on the US highway 93/95 that runs concurrent with I-515 towards Phoenix and you will find a nice quaint community full of parks, station casinos (Sunset Casino and Green Valley Ranch), and places to eat and drink like the Water Street District or maybe you would enjoy the atmosphere of Lake Las Vegas at any rate it makes for a nice relaxing day in the suburbs of Henderson. Right off the 215 traveling east St Rose Pkwy is another strip of highway in the area with many bars and dining options and just off the I-15 is the M Casino, very local but also very elegant and as a bonus feature if you continue to head south on the 95 towards Boulder City and beyond in about 20 minutes or so you will hit the Hoover Dam!
There are many off the strip places like Town Square or maybe you want to spend a day at the Wet N’ Wild water park in the Spring Valley area. The fact of the matter is you are not confined to the strip when you come to visit. Just like in the famous buffets here in Las Vegas there are lots of options to choose from!
